Highlights

Colonel Pedals With One Leg in Blue Streak Time Trial

by Chuck Smith

While Lance Armstrong impressed us while winning his sixth Tour de France, a Wright-Patterson cyclist demonstrated during the July 21 Blue Streak Time Trial that he can pedal with one leg!

Col. Charles Czarniecki of HQ AFMC/EN explained, “My left leg cramped rock hard just east of the back gate.  After a few shouts of pain, I pulled it out of the pedal and tried to get it to relax.  I couldn’t bend my left leg for three minutes, so I continued the course pedaling with just my right leg (passed by another four racers before my left leg recovered enough to pedal).  I had toe clips, so I could not pull the pedal with any force.  Just enough force to get the right pedal back to the top so I could push it back down.  My left leg was hanging straight down and didn’t want to bend so pedaling one legged did not have a good center of gravity.  It was not pretty, but it let me keep an eight mile per hour pace when the other alternative was getting off my bike.”

After about one-half mile of one-legged pedaling, Col. Czarniecki was able to pedal with two legs again.

Col. Czarniecki finished in 31 minutes and 3 seconds for an average speed of 19.43 miles per hour for the 10 mile circuit around the Area C flight line.

LtCol Dave Hardwick of 445 OSS/IN had the best time among the entrants from WPAFB.  His time of 25 minutes and 49 seconds and speed of 23.4 miles per hour put him in 20th place overall.   LtCol Hardwick has volunteered to time the Blue Streak Time Trials to date, so this was his first Blue Streak ride of the season.  He is president of the Wright Triathlon Club, which hosts its Brick competition around the flight line on non-Blue Streak Wednesdays.

Cindy Himes of HQ AFMC/XRCC said, “The wind was a nuisance and really slowed me down (that’s my excuse).  Himes finished in 33 minutes and 47 seconds, for an average speed of 17.76 miles per hour.

July 21 was the first Blue Streak Time Trial for Captain Joseph Giuliani of HQ AFMC/LGDA.  He finished in 31 minutes and 41 seconds for an average speed of 19.04 miles per hour.  He said, “It is motivating to ride with a large group.  I did not finish very high in the standings, but I think I did well considering how much time I spend riding my bike.   Hopefully with some practice I can improve the results.”

July 21 was also the first Blue Streak Time Trial for Captain Dain Kleiv of HQ AFMC/DPMOL.    He said, “I had a blast!  Good group of people and it was great to see that many cyclists here on base.”   Seventy Blue Streak riders competed on July 21.

Kleiv said, “That was the fastest ride I had ever done, so I was very happy and surprised.  Kleiv finished the 10-mile ride in   32 minutes and 13 seconds for an average speed of 18.72 miles per hour.

All bicyclists are invited to participate in the last two Blue Streak Time Trials of the 2004 season on Wednesday, August 18 and Wednesday, September 15.   Meet in the Tennis Club (Building 90) parking lot on Skeel Avenue near the Area C flight line by 1700 on both dates.   The registration deadline is 1730.  Numbers will be distributed by 1745, and the riders will be released in 30-second intervals starting at 1800.
