Highlights

June Highlights - Rain Does Not Stop Blue Streak

                                           By Chuck Smith

Sirens sounded, thunder boomed, and the sky opened over Wright Patterson AFB, dumping heavy rain onto the group of 38 USAF Blue Streak participants, determined to ride their monthly time trial around the flight line.

The bicyclists registered in the rain and their numbers were distributed in the rain, but the rain stopped just in time for the start of the time trial at 1800.

DCC member Col. Charles Czarniecki of HQ-AFMC/ENP finished the 10-mile course in 27 minutes and 42 seconds, for an average of 21.65 miles per hour.  He was disappointed that he was unable to reach his goal of 23 miles per hour. He hopes to reach this goal at least once during the three Blue Streak Time Trials before his planned October retirement.

Col. Czarniecki described the course as “a little wet” in the beginning, but in fairly good shape.   This was his 25th Blue Streak Time trial.  He has missed few Blue Streak Time Trials since the event began here in 1998.

Col. Czarniecki said, “We had a tail wind as we passed the tank farm” near the end of the course.  Steering with his aero bars, he had trouble guiding his bike around a sharp curve, and jumped the curb to the sidewalk.  He rode the sidewalk for a short distance before returning to the roadway, costing him some time.

DCC President Anita Patten was only 17 seconds slower than Col. Czarniecki, finishing in 27 minutes and 59 seconds for an average speed of 21.44 miles per hour.

DCC Member Scott Strong of Beavercreek finished third in the 36-45 age bracket, finishing in 25:49 for 23.23 miles per hour.

All are welcome to participate in the remaining 2004 USAF Blue Streak Time Trials, scheduled for July 21, August 18, and September 15 (third Wednesday in each month).  Plan to arrive at the Tennis Club parking lot on Skeel Avenue at 1700.  Registration will be open until 1730.  Numbers will be distributed at 1745.  The riders will be released in 30- second intervals beginning at 1800.
